UPPCO seeks a personable and professional Retirement Benefits Specialist to join their team in the Marquette, Michigan area. The ideal candidate has a thorough understanding of retirement plans and has a genuine interest in helping people navigate their retirement planning. Position offers applicants the opportunity of a hybrid remote work schedule after a successful training period is completed.
This position reports to the Human Resources Manager.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Process retirement benefit plans and manage documentation for accurate retiree billing and deductions.
- Collaborate with team to ensure compliance with governmental reporting requirements.
- Serve as primary contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators; assist retired employees as needed.
- Research/analyze benefits plans; recommend vendors that offer the best value and meet business needs.
- Examine/recommend possible plan design and benefit cost changes; implements new benefit programs.
- Develop/maintain relationships with advisors, actuaries, brokers, and vendors for accurate plan administration.
- Oversee annual open enrollment for retirees and assist team with active employee open enrollment.
- Handle day-to-day governmental reporting, compliance, fiduciary requirements, and annual audits/testing.
- Complete annual 401(k) calculations and compliance testing.
- Provide assistance and direction to retired employees to resolve claims, eligibility, and coverage issues, and advocate as needed.
- Provide retirement planning support to employees approaching retirement, covering all health, welfare, and retirement benefits.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of paperwork, record-keeping, and data transfer for services, premiums, and plan administration.
- Assist in developing benefit guides and communication materials with the Payroll & Benefits Specialist.
- Develop processes to continuously improve the efficiency of the retiree experience.
- Manage online pension administration and self-service database.
- Support Vice President of HR and HR Manager with policy maintenance and process improvements.
- Provide backup for various HR functions and perform general office duties.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
- 5 or more years’ experience managing and implementing retirement plans, including pensions and retiree benefits required.
- Knowledgeable about ERISA, DOL regulations, and the ACA.
- Strong grasp of laws and regulations for pension and retirement benefits.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Retirement Plan Professional Certification, a bonus.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to UPPCO locations, as needed, is required.
