The Marshfield Clinic Health System-Dickinson (DCHS) seeks a full-time Lab Assistant to join their team in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The ideal person for this role is someone with exceptional customer service skills who enjoys working alongside technical staff performing waived testing, collecting and processing specimens, and entering lab results.


  • Perform CLIA waived lab testing.
  • Assures quality of pre-analytical processes: proper patient identification and specimen labeling, verifying physician orders, patient registration, and order entry.
  • Coordinate off-site draws and specimen pickup, specimen processing, and reference lab sendouts.
  • Obtain from patient blood and non-blood specimens (urine, sputum, throat and nasopharyngeal swabs, etc.) for lab testing.
  • Oversee and maintain processing/phlebotomy inventory to ensure adequate supply levels and minimize outdated items.
  • Prepare specimens for reference lab dispatch and testing.
  • Continually assess customer service for areas of improvement.

WAGE. Starting pay of $15.49 – $22.46 per hour based on experience.

SCHEDULE. This position works nights 8pm-6am with 7 days on; 7 days off. The Lab Assistant participates in the rotating weekend schedule.


  • Completion/certification in a 1-year technical program such as Phlebotomy Technician (ASCP or ASPT), Medical Assistant, LPN, RN, Paramedic or other directly related medical position.
  • Associates degree in a relevant medical field, or equivalent on-the-job training preferred.
  • 1-year clinical/phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Ability to carry out the functions of this position which includes exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with a professional demeanor that ensures trust, competence, and confidentiality amongst patients, hospital staff, and clinical laboratories.
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-hire drug screening and background check.
