Tart Lumber Company, Inc.—a locally owned, full-service lumber and building materials supplier with a contractor hardware store, design showroom, and custom mill shop—seeks a Lumber & Building Supply Store Manager to join their team in Sterling, Virginia.

The ideal candidate will manage a team, oversee inventory, deliver exceptional customer service, and drive sales growth. Success in this role requires strong leadership, industry knowledge, and a proactive, hands-on management approach.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • $68,000 – $82,000 annual starting salary based on your knowledge and experience.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

As a key leader on our team, you’ll play a vital role in keeping our store running smoothly and profitably. Your day-to-day will include:

  • Managing daily store operations, including opening/closing, cash handling, and team oversight.
  • Hiring, training, scheduling, and leading employees to ensure top performance and great teamwork.
  • Delivering exceptional customer service and resolving any issues with professionalism and care.
  • Overseeing inventory—tracking stock levels, placing orders, and managing incoming shipments.
  • Driving sales performance by setting goals and implementing smart, effective strategies.
  • Keeping a close eye on pricing, margins, and promotions to maximize profitability.
  • Collaborating with your team to create a welcoming environment and a great customer experience.
  • Providing regular reports on sales, inventory, and team performance to support continuous improvement.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • 3 or more years of experience in retail or building materials sales, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or management role.
  • In-depth knowledge of lumber products, building materials, and construction-related supplies.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials (up to 50 pounds) and operate store equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office programs required; familiarity with Epicor Bistrack POS a bonus.
