Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO)

UPPCO seeks an Electric Distribution System Designer to join their team in Ishpeming, Michigan. In this role, you’ll help shape how power gets delivered to our communities—designing electric distribution systems that support everything from new neighborhoods to system upgrades and long-term improvements. You’ll turn ideas and field needs into clear, build-ready plans by creating construction drawings, estimating costs, assembling material lists, and processing work orders and documentation.

Your projects will be refreshingly varied and may include line extensions, upgrades, lighting projects, relocations, reconductoring, system conversions, road moves, industrial parks, subdivisions, primary metering, and communications make-ready work. No two days look exactly the same, and your work has a direct, visible impact on the communities we serve.

You’ll work alongside experienced teammates under the guidance of the Distribution Design Supervisor, with strong support and collaboration.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • $50.37 per hour based on your knowledge and experience.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with up to a 5% company match.
  • Additional insurances at no cost to you: short and long-term disability, medical emergency transport, basic life, accidental death & dismemberment, and employee assistance.
  • Generous paid time off and nine paid holidays.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

  • Design electric distribution systems that serve our communities—creating clear construction plans, sketches, and GIS as-builts for extensions, upgrades, relocations, and system improvements.
  • Analyze design options, apply distribution standards, specify materials, and use design tools to deliver safe, build-ready solutions.
  • Coordinate with engineers, operations, contractors, and other utilities to support joint facilities and smooth project execution.
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates by calculating material, labor, equipment, and contractor costs, and supporting bid packages and proper accounting.
  • Develop and maintain material requirements, updating changes as projects evolve.
  • Support project execution alongside Regional Engineers and Operations Supervisors—communicating clearly, resolving issues, and providing technical support during construction.
  • Process work orders end-to-end, including researching customer needs, gathering system data, supporting locates, securing permits and easements, and reviewing as-builts.
  • Deliver reliable, high-quality service by following UPPCO standards, policies, and regulatory requirements—and supporting restoration efforts when needed.
  • Build strong customer relationships by meeting on site, explaining options clearly, and responding promptly to questions.
  • Communicate effectively in person and in writing, using phones, email, text, and two-way radios.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reading technical publications, networking, and assisting with testing of new software and software changes.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Vocational degree in electric power distribution, successful completion of ICS Lineman’s Course or equivalent training required.
  • 3 years’ experience designing electrical facilities, or 4 years’ constructing electric utility distribution systems required.
  • Effective communication skills and experience interacting with customers in a service delivery environment required.
  • Proficiency with computers including Windows-based PCs, word processing, and spreadsheets required; experience with (or ability to become proficient with) SAP and estimating software.
  • Mechanical and computational aptitude required as you will read maps and construction documents, sketch drawings, and work with contracts and other documents pertinent to electric utilities.
  • Valid driver’s license required and be comfortable working where the work is, including frequent travel between locations and a mix of office and field responsibilities.
  • Must reside within 30 minutes of assigned Service Center under normal driving conditions.
