Copper Country Intermediate School District

The Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD) has an immediate opening for a Director of Finance and Shared Business Services professional to join their team in Hancock, Michigan.

This is a leadership role for someone who understands school finance at a high level and knows how to turn numbers into smart decisions. You’ll serve as a key advisor to the Superintendent, provide strategic financial guidance, and help make sure the ISD and local districts have the financial leadership and shared business support they need to operate well.

This is not a routine accounting role. You won’t be spending your days focused on transaction processing or basic bookkeeping. This position is about seeing the big picture—reviewing financial trends, forecasting what is ahead, guiding business managers, ensuring compliance, and helping district leaders understand the story behind the numbers so they can make sound decisions. If you’re a strong financial leader who values collaboration, service, and doing meaningful work that supports schools and communities, this may be a great fit.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • $105,000 – $135,000 annual starting salary based on education and experience.
  • Health insurance, or if no health insurance is needed—-we’ll pay you $661.84/month instead.
  • Dental and vision Insurance at no cost to the employee; CCISD pays 100% of premiums.
  • Long-term disability, and life and accidental death/dismemberment insurance.
  • Paid vacation, sick time, and personal days; paid holidays.
  • Retirement plan provided by the Michigan Public Schools Employees Plan.
  • Professional development assistance.
  • Full-time, year-round position.
  • Interviews begin in early May, with a start date in July of 2026.

WHAT YOU’LL DO.

  • Serve as the primary fiscal advisor to the Superintendent.
  • Translate complex financial reports into clear, useful updates/recommendations for leadership and Boards.
  • Conduct multi-year financial forecasting (funding changes, enrollment trends, long-term sustainability).
  • Interpret school finance laws, regulations, and guidance, including the Michigan School Accounting Manual.
  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate a team of Business Managers who support the ISD and participating local districts.
  • Review budgets, audits, and state reports to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
  • Serve as a liaison between the ISD and local district Superintendents to support strong, shared business services.
  • Oversee the annual audit process and serve as the main contact for external auditors.
  • Establish and monitor sound internal controls and financial procedures to safeguard public funds.
  • Oversee financial management and reporting for state and federal grants.
  • Support the evolving needs of the ISD and constituent districts as assigned by the Superintendent.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR.

  • A thoughtful, experienced finance leader who can look at the big picture and explain financial information clearly.
  • Someone who works well with others, communicates effectively, and builds strong relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of school finance, accounting standards, and Michigan reporting requirements.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and supporting staff.
  • Confidence presenting financial information and preparing clear, easy-to-understand reports and summaries.
  • Proficiency with advanced Excel; experience (or ability to get up to speed quickly) with school finance software such as SchoolsOpen, Munis, or similar systems.
  • At least 5 years of experience in school finance or public-sector financial management preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • A valid Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO) CFO or Business Office Manager certification is preferred, or the ability to obtain it within three years if hired for this position.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel regularly throughout the Copper Country ISD service area.
  • Availability to attend evening Board of Education meetings as needed.
