Are you a visionary leader adept in community growth and economic vitality? If so, Headwaters North SmartZone invites you to shape the future as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of our new economic development organization in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
As the first hire and CEO, you will be the driving force behind our mission to enhance the economic landscape of Sault Ste. Marie. You will work closely with local businesses, the university, government entities, research organizations, and community leaders to attract new investments, support existing enterprises and entrepreneurs, and create sustainable economic opportunities.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Develop and implement strategic plans to foster economic growth and community development.
- Collaborate with local stakeholders to identify and pursue economic opportunities.
- Promote Sault Ste. Marie as a prime location for business development and tourism.
- Lead fundraising efforts, including securing federal grants to support organizational initiatives.
- Oversee the daily operations and management of the organization.
- Advocate for policies and programs that benefit the local economy.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Entrepreneurship, Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and experience in intellectual property development, such as obtaining patents.
- A background as a community leader dedicated to local development.
- 10 years experience in a senior leadership role with profit & loss responsibility, governmental department, or non-profit required; an economic development organization a plus.
- Familiarity with federal grant administration and a track record of securing and managing grants.
- Strong strategic planning and project management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising and securing investments.
- Experience in education or intellectual property development, such as obtaining patents.
- A background as a community leader with a passion for local development.
- Knowledge of economic trends, challenges, and opportunities.
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Willingness and ability to travel at least 20% of time is required.
- Willingness and ability to relocate to the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan area is required.
