Northern Mutual Insurance Company

Northern Mutual Insurance Company seeks a full-time Claims Representative to join their team in Hancock, Michigan.

Whether you’re passionate about helping homeowners after a storm or assisting someone after a car accident, this role offers the opportunity to bring real relief to people when they need it most. You’ll be backed by a supportive team and empowered to do your best work. You’ll have the opportunity to choose a focus that best matches your skills and interests—Property Claims or Auto Physical Damage Claims—and work in a role that blends investigation, communication, and customer care. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong assessment skills who enjoys variety—working both in and out of the office—and thrives on solving problems. If you have a basic knowledge of vehicles or construction, that’s a plus. Prior insurance experience is helpful but not required—we’re happy to train someone with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and grow with us.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • $20.00 – $30.00 per hour based on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vison insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid vacation, paid sick time and paid holidays.
  • Opportunity to advance your position and pay in the company.
  • Full-time position offering four days from 8:00am–4:30pm and one day from 8:00am–12:00pm. Half day is your choice which day.

WHAT YOU’LL DO. This position offers a choice of tracks.

  • Auto Physical Damage Track: You’ll focus on vehicle damage claims, coordinating with repair shops, field appraisers, and policyholders throughout the process. Bonus points for auto estimating or auto repair/auto body experience and knowledge of auto repair procedures and auto claims.
  • Property Claims Track: You’ll focus on home or commercial property losses, working with contractors and field adjusters to assess damages and settle claims. Bonus points for someone with construction estimating experience and familiarity with property policies and repair practices.
  • Investigate reported claims and determine policy coverage.
  • Work closely with independent adjusters or field appraisers.
  • Communicate with policyholders, claimants, agents, contractors, and repair shops.
  • Negotiate and approve claim settlements.
  • Document all claim activity accurately and thoroughly.
  • Identify concerns for review.
  • Help people get back on their feet—fairly, promptly, and professionally.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR.

  • 18 years of age or older and a valid driver’s license are required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as you will work with a variety of people—employees, policyholders, agents, and contractors.
  • Experience working in a body shop or estimating auto physical damage, or estimating home damage preferred, however, we will train someone motivated to learn.
  • Knowledge of personal insurance policies, claims handling, and investigative procedures preferred.
  • Strong critical thinking, organizational, and negotiation abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and other Windows-based systems.
  • A service mindset and a calm, caring approach to tough situations.
