The Alpena County Road Commission seeks a full-time Class A CDL Truck Driver to join their team in Alpena, Michigan.

If you like working outdoors, operating trucks and equipment, and doing work you can actually see at the end of the day, this could be a great fit. This is much more than a driving job. You’ll help maintain and improve Alpena County roads and rights-of-way while working as part of a crew that puts safety first.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • $25.23 per hour starting pay with increases at 6 months and 1 year.

  • Year-round position working Monday-Thursday in the summer months (6am-4:30pm); Monday-Friday in winter months (7am-3:30pm).

WHAT YOUR DAYS LOOK LIKE.

No two seasons look exactly the same. You’ll operate trucks and equipment, perform road maintenance and construction work, and pitch in wherever the crew needs you.

  • Operate trucks and equipment to haul, spread, blade, and place gravel, sand, stone, and other road materials.
  • Plow snow and operate attachments such as wing plows, underbody scrapers, spreaders, brooms, and trailers.
  • Operate equipment such as loaders, tractors, rollers, brush chippers, power brooms, and Durapatchers.
  • Patch blacktop, install or repair signs, guardrails, highway markers, and snow fencing, and assist with other road maintenance and construction projects.
  • Cut brush and remove trees using chainsaws and other powered equipment.
  • Perform hands-on work such as shoveling, handling culvert pipe, changing tires and scraper blades, installing tire chains, and using hand and power tools.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and preventive maintenance to help keep trucks and equipment ready to work.
  • Assist with traffic control, building and grounds maintenance, and other crew duties as needed.
  • Work safely around active traffic and in changing road, weather, and seasonal conditions.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • At least 1 year experience working in road construction and/or road maintenance is preferred.
  • Valid Class A CDL with air brake and manual transmission capability required.
  • Ability to safely operate trucks, equipment, hand tools, and powered equipment.
  • A safety-first attitude and willingness to be part of the crew.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in changing Michigan weather.
  • Ability to perform physical and seasonal duties such as brush and tree cutting, sign installation, traffic control, and general labor.
  • Ability to collaborate with others as well as work independently while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to travel throughout Alpena County to worksites in a company provided vehicle.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal scheduled hours and/or respond to emergencies if needed.
  • Ability to pass a physical, drug test, and fitness assessment (paid for by the Road Commission) required.
