Pettibone

Pettibone seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Engineering team in Baraga, Michigan.

This is a great role for a mechanical engineer who likes designing equipment that actually gets built, tested, improved, and used in the real world. You’ll help design rugged off-road machines and heavy equipment used in industries like construction, forestry, steel pipe, mining, railroad, and seismic exploration.

In other words: this is not “sit in a cube and never see your work again” engineering. This is practical, hands-on, make-the-machine-stronger-better-smarter engineering.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • Competitive salary aligned with your experience and qualifications.
  • Medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage (employee and family plans available).
  • Health Savings Account and Flex Spending Account.
  • Company paid short-term and long-term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with up to 4% company match.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Paid time off (vacation, sick, holidays, and volunteer time—just to name a few).
  • Full-time position with schedule flexibility (Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm, or Mon-Thurs 6am – 4pm).
  • Great onboarding and training program.
  • A safe, team-oriented, fun work environment.

WHAT YOU’LL DO. You’ll design, improve, support, and release mechanical systems and structural components for off-road machines and mobile heavy equipment.

  • Design and redesign vehicle structures, sheet metal, heavy weldments, and related assemblies.
  • Perform engineering calculations to determine component size, strength, and performance.
  • Review and release drawings created in SolidWorks.
  • Prepare change requests, requisitions, parts lists, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
  • Use tools such as FMEA, FEA, 8D problem solving, and risk assessments to validate designs.
  • Participate in design reviews with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, sales, and service teams.
  • Support prototype builds and help test machines/components in real or simulated field conditions.
  • Investigate field issues and help develop practical, data-driven corrective actions.
  • Support cost reduction, manufacturability, and continuous improvement efforts on current products.
  • Help maintain engineering standards, product documentation, and technical specifications.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR. We’re looking for someone who is technically strong, practical, detail-minded, and comfortable working with people across the business.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 3 or more years of mechanical engineering experience required.
  • Experience with mechanical design, structural components, weldments, sheet metal, or mobile equipment strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks required.
  • Experience with PDM and ERP/MRP software preferred.
  • General knowledge of MathCAD, AutoCAD, DraftSight, Parker IQAN, and Zuken E3 is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, sales, and service teams.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, including overnight travel, as needed.
