Alpena County Road Commission
The Alpena County Road Commission seeks an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join their team in Alpena, Michigan to help keep our trucks, road maintenance equipment, and specialized equipment safe, reliable, and ready to work.
If you know your way around gas and diesel engines and enjoy diagnosing problems, making repairs, and keeping equipment running the way it should, this could be a great fit. You’ll work on everything from pickups and heavy trucks to road construction and maintenance equipment, with responsibility for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, transmission, cooling, and other vehicle systems. This position reports to the Chief Mechanic.
WHAT WE OFFER.
- $26.50 per hour starting pay with increases at 6 months and 1 year.

- Year-round position working Monday-Thursday in the summer months (6am-4:30pm); Monday-Friday in winter months (7am-3:30pm).
WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Perform preventive maintenance on trucks, vehicles, and mechanical equipment.
- Diagnose, service, and repair gas and diesel-powered equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair engines, brakes, electrical systems, fuel systems, hydraulics, transmissions, ignition and exhaust systems, axles, cooling systems, and air conditioning.
- Inspect equipment, identify mechanical problems, and determine needed repairs.
- Use computer diagnostic equipment along with hand, electric, and air-powered tools.
- Inspect, adjust, repair, and replace parts and components as needed.
- Perform welding, metal cutting, minor body repair, and related fabrication work.
- Change and repair tires and tubes.
- Maintain appropriate repair records and documentation.
- Perform Truck Driver duties when needed.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Five years of experience in heavy-duty truck and equipment repair is preferred.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and manual transmission capability helpful.
- State certification as a Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic.
- Strong working knowledge of gas and diesel engines.
- Knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems and components.
- Ability to use diagnostic equipment and repair tools safely and effectively.
- Ability to maintain accurate files and repair documentation.
- Ability to work effectively with co-workers and interact professionally with the public.
- Ability to work extended hours when needed.
- Experience with parts and equipment inventory systems is helpful.
- Supervisory experience is a plus.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
