Gogebic County Road Commission

The Gogebic County Road Commission is seeking a Mechanic to join their team in Bessemer, MI. As a Mechanic, you will repair and maintain a wide range of motors and mechanical equipment, including welding, wiring, motor and transmission overhaul, hydraulics and installation of special equipment. 

This position requires someone with well-rounded knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical components, hydraulic systems, brakes, and cooling and air conditioning systems. 


  • Wage of $26.12 per hour.

  • Summer schedule: Monday – Thursday 6:00am –4:00pm CST. 
  • Winter schedule: Monday – Friday 6:00am – 2:00pm CST with some overtime (mostly in winter) when needed. 


  • Repair, rebuild, and/or replace various parts as needed on a variety of equipment and vehicles, ranging from chainsaws to large trucks and tractors, including: 
  • Engines. 
  • Powertrain components, such as transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, clutches, and drive shafts. 
  • Hydraulic components, such as hydraulic cylinders, valves, and pumps. 
  • Steering components, such as power steering, tie rods, steering gear boxes, drag links, and idler arms. 
  • Brake components, such as brake shoes, air brake chambers, valves, drums and rotors, and heavy equipment tracks. 
  • Carburetors, alternators, starters, distributors, generators, and solenoids. 
  • Install new equipment, including snowplow frames, underbody scrapers, wiring lights and hydraulic systems. 
  • Maintain vehicles by performing general maintenance and safety checks, including changing oil, lubricating parts, changing tires, etc. 
  • Troubleshoot field services calls to repair in the field, or transport back to the shop for repair. 
  • Additional duties as needed. 


  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License by date of hire required. 
  • Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation drug screening. 
  • 2+ years of experience working in the field of mechanics preferred. 
  • Ability to read blueprints and electrical charts. 
  • Welding experience, a plus. 
  • Proven experience investigating and troubleshooting mechanical problems preferred. 


ABOUT: The Gogebic County Road Commission was established in 1909.  GCRC is responsible for over 1,000 miles of paved and unpaved roads and 61 bridges. We currently have a five-member Board of Road Commissioners who are appointed by the County Board.  County road commissions were organized by Public Act 283 of 1909 to achieve two primary goals: To provide continuity in road construction and maintenance across the state; and to provide cost-efficient and high-quality road services for county roads.
