The Michigan Catholic Conference is seeking a Senior Accountant to join their team in Lansing, MI. As a Senior Accountant, you are responsible for managing complex financial processes including reconciliations, journal entries, cash flow, and investment transactions, while preparing financial statements and reports for internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, you will support budgeting, audits, benefit programs, and coordinate with vendors and leadership to ensure accurate and timely financial operations.

This position will support 9 separate entities: Michigan Catholic Conference, Lay Employee Retirement Program, 6 Diocesan Priest Pension Programs, National Catholic Investment Pool.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.

  • Reconcile claims, reserves, and investment accounts, and prepare related journal entries across multiple retirement and benefit plans.
  • Manage accounts receivable processes, including roll forwards and entries supported by vendor reporting.
  • Oversee cash and fund transfers between main and investment accounts, including acting as backup for daily cash management.
  • Process and record miscellaneous transactions, including accruals and periodic investment activities.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements for MCC, Lay Retirement, and Priest Plans.
  • Review and oversee accounts payable activity and coordinate financial data from outside vendors.
  • Manage the finance calendar by setting and communicating deadlines for AP and GL activities, and coordinate preparation of quarterly financial statements, narratives, and updates for MCC and Lay Retirement.
  • Prepare and reconcile journal entries for unemployment payments and investment-related fees, and produce related reports for diocesan use and quarterly reviews.
  • Track and manage audit and budget tasks, including medical program revenues, services and admin fees, claims by category, and variance reporting as needed.
  • Oversee flexible spending account reconciliations, annual closeout activities, and respond to request from program managers and the CFO.
  • Provide input and oversight of all departmental journal entries.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting is preferred.
    • 8+ years of experience in accounting will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in accounting preferred.
  • Sage Intacct Accounting software experience is a plus.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization, and/or within various industries is a plus.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred but not required.
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work with a high level of discretion, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work as part of a small, cohesive team.
